>> good morning to you. thank you for waking up to us. i am heather nauert. >> i am heather childers. it is tuesday march 7th. thank you so much for watching "fox & friends first". we start with this an extreme weather alert so-called snow quester packing a punch on the east coast. virginia by far the hardest hit with more than 20 inches of snow in some parts. 250,000 people waking up without power. >> a bit further north in the capital the storm was mostly abust. forecasters calling for 10 inches of snow. most of it ended up actually being rain. the threat of wild weather shut down federal offices. the storm is now moving to the northeast. bringing with it strong winds

snow and coastal flooding. janice dean is here and she is tracking the track of that storm. good morning, janice. how are things looking? >> look at some of the snow totals 2 feet of snow in the mountains of west virginia. 20 inches in fishersville. even down to north carolina half a foot of snow. even though dc was mainly a rain event west of dc north of the area got the snow we were forecasting. let's take a look at the satellite imagery over the last few hours. this is the huge storm system you can see the impact along massachusetts the snow is flying across long island up toward connecticut and boston. you are also seeing the snow. that's where we think we are going to see the potential for the most snow is in the new england area. temperatures too warm for snow.

regardless we are going to see the airport across the northeast. excess of 5 miles an hour in some cases and heavy snow will develop in eastern new england. 6:00 a.m. friday and we are seeing the snow fly across boston and new york. stay with us and then you have the coastal flooding a lot of coastal flooding. winds will be relentless. this is sustained winds. wind gusts of 40, 50 even 60 miles per hour. all along the coast and long island. we will monitor that situation through out the day today and into tomorrow. the good news temperatures are going to warm up. any snow that's on the ground is

nation's capitol. coming to a halt because of two storms. one that ended up not being much at all the other senator rand paul's nearly 13 hour filibuster of john brennan. peter doocy has been following live. what a marathon. >> it really was, heather. it's the filibuster went until 12:39 a.m., 12-hours and 52 minutes the whole time senator paul was on his feet in the chamber with no bathroom breaks. senator hall was protesting the nomination of john brennan for cia director. the larger point he was trying to make is about his belief that it is unconstitutional to use drones against american citizens. >> to be bombed in your sleep? there's nothing constitutional

about that. he said trust him. he says he doesn't intend to do so but he might. mr. president that's just not good enough. >> senator paul made frequent trips to a deck on the floor that is full of candy for fuel and was joined by at least a dozen other senators in his effort including democrats. not all republi with this man. >> we are not fighting a crime we are fighting a war. i don't think he believes we are at war. i believe we are at war and i believe al qaeda is trying to recruit american citizens as i speak. >> just a few wieks aeeks ago president obama tried to answer questions about his drone policy. clearly didn't do enough for senator paul. >> we respect and have a whole bunch of safeguards in terms of how we conduct counter-terrorism operations outside of the united

government shove something through that might be in the worst interest of the american people. the other thing that a filibuster does, a real filibuster, it gives the american people time to begin to get familiar with some of the facts of the situation. remember, when president obama forced obama care down the throats of the american people and nancy pelosi says we have to pass it to tell you what's in it. you remember that phrase? >> that was the best imitation i have ever heard. >> come on, shawn. that is an insult to the intelligence of the american people. the filibuster, give american people a chance to get familiar with some of the facts. >> there you go. while rand paul was filibustering he signed the bipartisanship. the president invited 12 senators with him last night in dc. what do they talk about?

shawn johnson going on the record to talk about that. >> primarily concentrate on the budget issues entitlement reform tax reform all of the issues we have to discuss and gain agreement on if we are going to put this country on this path. it wasn't in negotiation. it was a very open discussion of all of the issues we have to really work on. >> does it surprise you? >> not really. we all know the elements of the problem. it is not rocket science. we know we have to deal with it. it's a matter of coming to terms. we talked about tax reform being a wider variety of variables in terms of grappling with that issue. >> earlier in the day jay carney says the president wants to talk about a grand bargain budget deal but also hopes to come together on issues like immigration reform.

gore owes the money. >> a guy claims to be a big media consultant with a long track record he came up with the idea for al go-jazeera to buy current tv. took it to a finance office. >> he was taken seriously. >> he is trying to get $15 million because he says that gore and current tv violated the implied, it's an implied breech of contract. there was no written contract. if you go with the finance plan and you cut off the people to put it together. >> you can't do that. >> he also says in the lawsuit gore was opposed to the plan originally but it was his step by step how to get it through that gore changed his mind. >> cable tv prices headed up, up, up. why now?

we have an extreme weather alert. a blatant winter storm dumping as much as 20 inches of snow on parts of western virginia last night. these residents are digging out all of that heavy wet snow. meantime 250,000 people waking up without power. >> that storm is still on the move this morning. it is making its way up to new england it is the last thing people around here need. >> it is going to be around here today and tomorrow. that's why we are calling it a slow mover. we are looking at possibility of snow around new york city area up toward boston. the heaviest totals will be over new england. they have seen their share of snowstorms.

unfortunately it will look like several more inches of snow west of the boston area. here is one of our computer models. a little aggressive but certainly 6-12 inches possible. maybe 3-5 in and around the new york city area. mainly a rain event. coastal flood advisories and watches and warnings are posted for the very vulnerable areas of new jersey toward long island coastal connecticut and along the border of massachusetts up toward the northern new england area. 2sh 5 nac -- 2-5 inches of snow and around new york and bullseye 6-12 inches boston west of boston down to providence, rhode island. we will continue to monitor. wind gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour. that will be an ongoing concern. check with your airports if you are traveling today. back to you heather and heather. >> janice dean, thank you. >> it was really windy

yesterday. >> the storm that really wasn't actually slowed down the nation's capital, though, all of the talk in washington was republican senator rand paul's nearly 13 hour filibuster which stalled john brennan's nomination to leave the cia. doug luzader is live for us in washington with more on this. he has stopped talking at this point. >> he has. >> you think he's sleeping in this morning? very long day for rand paul. he went last night until 12:40 a.m. 12:39 to be exact. he would have had to have dogon another 12-hours to set a record. no record set but he generated a lot of tanks. >> i rise today to begin to filibuster john brennan's nomination to the cia. >> from there fast forward because this went on and on for more than 12-hours. the sun would set over the capital and he brought senate business to a screeching halt.

once a member takes the floor it is theirs to keep. paul is temporarily blocking the nomination of john brennan from being the cia director. the u.s. drone policy and whether there should be any checks on presidential power to target even u.s. citizens in the united states. the u.s. attorney general eric holder has conflicting views with where the bower actual liechs it's limit. the issue of attacks on u.s. citizens at home has created odd alliance on liberals on the left and liberal leaning republicans on the right. >> your notification is the buzz of the propeller on the drone as it flies over head in the second before you are killed. is that what we really want from our government? >> paul got assistance from other republicans who rose to add lengthy questions to give him a break. even one democrat helped him out at one point. filibusters are ultimately just

angry because i see what the president is doing. he's not trying to solve the fiscal problems by diverting attention he can't play golf other people who are independent are going to go come on that's ridiculous. you see what i am talking about. it could have a backlash to help him. >> it could but i think people will see we have a president in bush so many didn't like was unpopular very unpopular at the end. he gave up golf in 2003 because of people being in harm's way he didn't golf for five-years. this president doubled down 115 or 16 golf outings. i think people are getting it, bill. we don't have to hurt the school children if he will give up golf. it is bringing attention to the fact that this president is not willing to give up even a golf outing to let thousands of kids come walking on a self guided tour through the white house.

his funeral profession. we are being told the socialist president died from a massive heart attack as he was battling cancer. the head of the presidential guard revealed that chavez could no longer talk. chavez' cancer was in a very advanced stage. a sheriff's deputy runs straight into a burning home to save a family inside and it was all caught on camera. you can see he runs for the front door with pieces of wood falling from the ceiling. the deputies found the 76-year-old man and his dog inside the home and he saved them. the man's wife managed to make it out on her own. unfortunately no one was hurt. the fire had been started by a wood stove that was on the front porch. in the earl mroirng hours of her wedding day four calls for help came from soccer star hope solo's house after fights broke out. those 911 calls made by her brother just released.

>> good morning to you. it is 44 minutes after the hour. let's span the globe to see what stories are making headlines over seas. first to mexico this morning where a giant wave killing an american tourist and leaving another in serious condition. it happened while they were walking down the beach in cabo san lucas. the elderly pair pulled from the water by the navy after they were swept out to sea. take a look at the severe flooding in peru the water destroying 4,000 buildings in central peru and leaving nearly 18,000 families without homes. no word on any injuries yet. heather? >> well, a battle is brewing between a christian family and the white house. they could be deported all because a mom and a dad want to home school their children. fox news radio's todd starks is following the story for us. he joins us with the new development. what is going on here? >> good morning heather. the family fled germany in 2008 mom, dad their 6 children all

seeking political asylum. they are evangelical christians and the german government threatened to take away their children and throw them in jail just because they refused to stop home schooling. it requires children to attend public school. parents who don't comply face punishment. the american based home school legal defense association they applied for political asylum a judge granted the family refuge and they settled into a new life purchasing a small tennessee farm in the shadows of the great mountains. but the obama administration stepped in and objected to political asylum. the justice department says no one has a right to home school anywhere and they do not believe the german government has r violated the familiar lace human rights and homeland security demanded the christian family be deported. the home school legal defense association calls the

administration's decision utter repudiation of parental and religious liberty. let's put this in perspective. he is granting amnesty for millions of people who came here illegally and just last week the administration released thousands of illegals who had committed crimes but they want to deport a christian family just because they want to home school. now the family's hopes and dreams now rest with the u.s. circuit court of appeals and there's no word when they might hand down a ruling. >> thank you for joining us this morning. appreciate it. the time now is almost 10 minutes until the top of the hour. still ahead is this breaking the law?
